Associated History & Facts
· The Doppelgangers U2's Official lookalike band were formed by U2 and video director Kevin Godley to appear in the U2 Video “Even Better Than The Real Thing”in February 1992 to be lookalikes for U2, they spent four days filming alongside U2 in Carnaby Street London, & Pinewood Film Studios. - The video was voted best MTV Music Video of 1992.
Whilst Working with U2 The then unamed Doppelgangers had the idea to become a real band, BONO Thought it was a great idea, and said "Call yourselves DOPPELGANGERS" - So we did! This propelled The Doppelgangers into being, making them the worlds first & Official U2 Lookalike / Tribute band..
· The Doppelgangers appeared on MTV's “Most Wanted” TV show where they were interviewed by Ray Cokes to help promote U2’s single “Even Better Than The Real Thing” where they also performed “Angel of Harlem”.
· The Doppelgangers appeared on RTE's Pat Kenny Show combined broadcast with U2’s Zoo TV’s and / Channel 4’s global broadcast Live to 32 countries dressed in U2's actual stage clothes (loaned from U2) The Doppelgangers performed to the track “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horse’s” in front of U2 themselves as they were sitting in the audience. watching the performance..
Bono stated "It's great to have these guys here replacing us", -"They do a much better job than us on Television", "Very happy to have such a great group of Doppelgangers to take our place!”.
· The Doppelgangers appeared in several international magazines including Q magazine charting the success of tribute bands, they also appeared in U2's own Official fan club magazine Propaganda (issue 19) featuring in a four page article covering The Doppelgangers creation & working relationship with U2, including being the first U2 tribute band to tour live after being given permission to do so by Paul McGuinness in 1992.
· The Doppelgangers would ocassionally be asked to "stand in” on U2’s behalf on TV and Radio if U2 themselves were unavailable. The Doppelgangers also appeared on Channel 4’s “Naked City” TV show where they were interviewed by Presenter & Journalist Caitlin Moran as U2 were away on tour in Italy. The Doppelgangers stood in & represented U2 once again as VIP guests at The London Press launch of the “Zoo TV Live in Sydney” concert video as U2 were unavailable to attend.
Playing Live & Touring:
· In 1992 U2’s Manager Paul McGuinness granted his & U2's permission & blessing for The Doppelgangers to be the first U2 Lookalike / Tribute band to tour their live U2 show throughout the UK & Europe.
The Doppelgangers where also the first Lookalike - Tribute band to secure a major sponsored tour with Topshop / Topman with a major University tour thoughout the UK.. Members of U2's staff such as the legendary Peter “Willie” Williams U2’s concert stage designer would visit The Doppelgangers tribute shows.
The Doppelgangers are now an internationally recognised part of U2's history which is well documented in various books, magazines, websites including in Matt McGee's book "U2 A Diary" published by Omnibus Press.
